Eight directions, one reading

Each direction has a use we look for first. The compass on this page is that order. A consult still reads your drawing, because no single room decides the house.

The compass

Eight directions. One reading.

Choose a point. The note beside it is the use we look for first.

WaterNortheast

Northeast

The precious corner. Give it light, a little water, and quiet. Prayer, a window, or simply open floor.

Questions

How do I find the northeast of my plot?

Mark north on the drawing, then the corner that faces both north and east is northeast. A phone compass is enough to start. The consult checks that mark against the plan.

What does the northwest suit?

Northwest suits movement and air: a guest room, a less permanent room, or a window that can breathe. It is not the place we look first for the main bedroom.

Must every room match its direction exactly?

No. The reading looks for the best fit the existing walls allow. A room can stay where it is when a change of facing or use does the same work.
